In 4° (29.5 x 20.5 cm) - 190 pages - Print run of 700 copies - 52
medals catalogued and photographed in black and white.
Preface by Sen. Mafalda Molinari.
The volume provides an overview of the medals relating to Civitavecchia,
the port near Rome which had and still has a significant role in the social,
economic and cultural development of the two cities, a role which has
been immortalized by the medals. The volume examines three and a half
centuries (1508-1857) of the history of this city, and consequently of
Rome too: fortifications built to protect the State’s territory,
military preparations and campaigns to oppose the constant threat of the
power of Turkey, works of town planning, for the common good and for social
development, and measures taken to increase trade and one of the first
stretches of railway. These are some of the most significant events that
the medals commemorate and which contributed to the development of the
Church. In addition an artistic examination of the various medals reveals
a compendium of art history. The medals are all photographed, and accompanied
by technical-descriptive information, and information on the historical
background.
The volume is completed by an extensive appendix of documents, a short
glossary of terms concerning medals, a full apparatus of notes, a bibliography,
and various alphabetical indexes.
