Preface by Father Leonard E. Boyle O.P.
(Prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Library)
This is a full bibliography of works on medals in general, and Italian
medals in particular. Given its size and the number of titles listed,
this work can be considered the most complete treatment of the subject
that has been published so far. Every publication referred to, whether
a book or an article, is accompanied by a brief but clear and exhaustive
commentary. An extremely useful alphabetical index of the titles and a
still more useful alphabetical index of the themes facilitate consultation
of the volume, particularly for those without detailed knowledge who are
trying to find their bearings in certain themes. A preface and a history
of books on medals from XVI century to the present day (in Italian and
English) form an introduction to the actual catalogue. A useful price
list (revised in 1997) completes the information in the catalogue. The
work is indispensable for those who wish to undertake the study of the
fascinating subject of medals, which involves so much more than just art.
“The volume in question came out in June 1997 and it was clear
at once that it filled a gap, proving to be of enormous use to those interested
in the study of medals, whether scholars or simple enthusiasts. One of
the author’s fundamental virtues is that of compiling a long list
of specific texts, articles in journals, contributions to conferences,
with a clear and detailed commentary. It is a work that can be immediately
understood and consulted both by the specialist and the amateur…”
